15.36xEA - Urethane (Thermoplastic) - European Adhesives

This raw material market report on thermoplastic urethanes includes all types of thermoplastic urethane resins, as well as isocyanate compounds. This category also includes blended compositions in which a urethane is the main constituent. Thermoplastic urethanes are linear, high molecular weight polymers based on the reaction product of a polyisocyanate and a polyol. Commercial products are available at various molecular weights and levels of crystallinity, allowing the formation of adhesives with different physical properties, such as flexibility and toughness. Thermoplastic urethane polymers contain no residual isocyanate functionality, therefore, they do not require the use of an anhydrous solvent. Formulated adhesives often contain other resins and polymers which are added to improve specific adhesion and/or elevated temperature performance. Modifying resins include phenolics and hydroxylated vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers.

Thermoplastic urethane adhesives are usually marketed as solvent based systems. In some applications, such as shoe adhesives, the adhesive is applied to one or both substrates, dried to remove the solvent, then bonded via a heat sealing operation. Two component adhesives based on thermoplastic urethanes are usually formulated with other hydroxyl-containing resins and a polyisocyanate crosslinker then is added just prior to the application. These adhesives are used for those end uses requiring approved elevated temperature performance and/or plasticizer resistance, such as vinyl film lamination. Thermoplastic urethane adhesives are also used in some specialty applications.

Adhesives based on thermoplastic urethanes have excellent cohesive strength and exhibit good specific adhesion to a variety of substrates, such as metal, wood and leather. They also have good adhesion to problem substrates, such as PVC, rubber and polyurethane.

This resin classification market report on urethane (thermoplastic) estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry.
