Single copy - September 2004
TZMI's TiO2 Review covers the TiO2 pigment industry and its major end-use markets including paint and coatings, plastics, paper and ink. The newsletter provides current and timely market commentary and analysis relevant to understanding the growth and economics of the TiO2 pigment industry. Regular pricing trends are presented, including a focus on raw material costs. In this issue: Our regional focus for this issue is Europe. Trade statistics for this month concentrate on import and export statistics of pigment for Europe, highlighting the high proportion of intra-regional trade. There is however a discernable trend within the figures of several pigment producing countries increasing pigment exports to the dynamic Asia-Pacific region.
The major news in this issue is the closure of Kerr-McGee's sulfate route TiO2 pigment plant in the US this month, representing the end of the sulfate pigment process in that country. To mark this important milestone, this issue of TiO2 Review includes a review of the sulfate process – its history, its highs and lows, and its future. TZMI takes a detailed look at the development of the sulfate process in the US, examining its demise, particularly the impact of falling demand for anatase pigment from the local US paper and board industry.
The feature article is on TiO2 pigment use in decor paper. Decor paper production plants are predominantly located within Europe, although production is growing outside the region as demand for paper based laminates, including laminate flooring, starts to escalate in non European markets. Decor paper production is an important niche market for the TiO industry, consuming about 150,000 tpa of pigment in 2003, or approximately 45% of total TiO2 pigment consumed by the entire paper industry.
Pigment producers have announced a further round of price increases, but what is really happening with pigment prices? TiO2 Review discusses pigment prices in our regular pricing pages, incorporating some of the trends contained in the financial reports of the major pigment producers in H1 2004. Pigment sales volumes for H1 2004 showed a significant increase compared to the corresponding period in 2003, but prices on the whole remained static.
