TZMI TiO2 Review: January 2005

Single copy - January 2005

TZMI's TiO2 Review covers the TiO2 pigment industry and its major end-use markets including paint and coatings, plastics, paper and ink. The newsletter provides current and timely market commentary and analysis relevant to understanding the growth and economics of the TiO2 pigment industry. Regular pricing trends are presented, including a focus on raw material costs. In this issue: The year 2004 was marked by a strong recovery in the global TiO2 industry. High levels of demand and capacity utilisation were widely reported, which were eventually met by some increases in prices during the second half of the year. A full overview of the industry for 2004 will be provided in the March issue of TiO2 Review, including an analysis of full-year financial results and commentary on current supply and demand.

The featured region for this month is Asia-Pacific. This region was responsible for much of the increase in global demand during 2004. Detailed import and export statistics presented in this issue include statistics for China, Japan and Australia, as well as an overview of regional consumption and production for 2004. Consumption within the region grew by an estimated 9% for the year, with China accounting for over 50% of this growth. Some of this increase in Chinese consumption has been met by increased domestic production, with production of pigmentary grade TiO2 estimated to have reached 460,000 tonnes for 2004, but there has also been an estimated 10% growth in pigment imports for the year. For the first ten months of 2004, Chinese imports of TiO2 pigment (HS codes 320611 and 282300) were 218,000 tonnes. This compares to US import volumes of 211,000 tonnes for the same period.

A further round of TiO2 price increases is currently underway with most major producers announcing increases in all global markets. Some raw material prices also increased substantially during 2004.

This month's feature entitled "Making the grade" provides an overview of some of the more recent grade changes, with tables listing major grades by major application in the end-use markets of paint, plastic and paper.
