Mineral Sands Report: November 2005

Single copy - November issue

Mineral Sands Report is a monthly newsletter covering all aspects of the titanium minerals, TiO2 pigment and zircon industries. It provides up to date news, analysis, pricing and data, making it the source of information for the industry. In the November 2005 issue of Mineral Sands Report:

News- Rio Tinto restructures industrial minerals division... US$43 million expansion for Namawka Sands... Kumba buyout of Ticor to go ahead... Tronox IPO details released... Quarterly production results for feedstock producers...

Industry Insight- The trouble with slimes. The presence of very fine material below 50 microns, known as slimes, can significantly impact both the mining and separation of heavy mineral deposits and reduce heavy mineral recoveries. The presence of slimes is therefore typically detrimental to the cost of mineral sands mining. As traditional mineral sands deposits are becoming exhausted and companies look to deposits that may have higher slimes contents, mining and processing solutions that address higher slimes content will become increasingly important.

Meeting Report- 2005 Heavy Minerals Conference. The fifth SME Heavy Minerals Conference was held last month covering a wide range of technical subjects from exploration to mining and beneficiation through to rehabilitation. There were 38 papers presented at the conference and two keynote addresses, one of which was delivered by TZMI's Steve Gilman. In this report, we present a summary of a selection of papers covering items of new and general interest.

Trade Data- TZMI examines trade production and pricing for world slag and mineral production for South Africa, Canada and Norway.

Pricing Pages- Regular pricing information and pricing developments for feedstocks, and TZMI’s Australian Feedstock Price Index.

Quarterly Update- This month, Mineral Sands Report presents an update of developments in supply-demand for TiO2 pigment.
