Styrene butadiene copolymers (random SBR) include all solvent and water borne polymers of styrene and butadiene in which the monomers are randomly polymerized. SB synthetic rubbers were commercialized during the 1940s as a replacement for natural rubber, which was in short supply due to World War II. Significant use of solvent based adhesives developed during the 1950’s when more readily soluble SBR became available. SB rubber, specifically designed for use in both solvent and water borne adhesives, mastics and sealants, is available today in solid, emulsion and latex forms. Products differ in such chemical composition aspects as the styrene butadiene ratio, emulsifier type, gel strength and molecular weight.
SBR solvent borne and water borne adhesives are usually formulated with tackifiers, antioxidants and fillers, and in the majority of cases, cost is almost as important as performance in formulation design. The ratio of SBR to tackifier usually ranges from 1:0.8 and 1:1.5 and, in line with the comment on cost, the lowest cost tackifiers that are compatible with SBR are used. Historically, these have been aromatic C9 hydrocarbons in combination with smaller amounts of rosin esters and terpenes (including terpene phenolics). With the escalation of aromatic raw material cost, and as a result of the highly competitive Tall Oil Rosin (TOR) environment, many applications have been converted to lower quality TOR derivatives. Crosslinking/vulcanizing agents also may be incorporated for applications requiring elevated temperature creep or shear strength. Additionally, SB rubbers (solid and latex types) are often blended with other elastomers, such as natural rubber or neoprene, to achieve specific adhesion properties. Both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons are utilized in solvent based systems.
This resin classification market report on styrene butadiene estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry. |
