15.30USA - Silicones - U.S. Adhesives

This raw material market report on silicones includes information on a family of vulcanizing liquid elastomers composed principally of various silanols (hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes). They are supplied as both one- and two-package compositions, both of which will cure at room temperature and are commonly referred to as RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing). The adhesive compositions are virtually the same as the RTV silicone sealant materials. The key component, a low molecular weight silanol-terminated polymer, can be condensed in the presence of either an acid or a base catalyst with a polyfunctional silane to give a room temperature cured silicone rubber. The new urethane-silicone RTV adhesives and the radiation curable-RTV adhesives are now included in this section. In addition to the polymeric components mentioned, fillers, adhesion promoters, stabilizers, and plasticizers are used to formulate silicone adhesives.

Silicone RTV compositions have excellent low temperature flexibility, long-term aging characteristics, thermal stability, and outstanding resistance to chemicals, UV light, and ozone. Silicone RTV rubbers also have excellent electrical properties and maintain these properties at elevated temperatures, including retention of dielectric strength, volume resistance and power factor.

The one-package RTV silicones generally exhibit the best adhesion to a range of substrates. The two-package systems usually require primer surface treatment to achieve the best adhesion properties. Glass, plastic, ceramic, wood, and metal are the most common substrates on which silicone adhesives are used. Silicones also find wide use as sealants for adhering windows in curtain wall construction as well as in the do-it-yourself market, but these sealant volumes are not included in this study. This resin classification market report on silicones estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry.
