Tufted carpets represented approximately 75-80% of European carpet production in 1998, as measured in square meters of carpet. Tufted carpets are manufactured by inserting pile using needles through a primary backing (which is either woven or non-woven). A secondary backing is applied consisting of synthetic yarns and foams, as well as compounds of jute. This secondary backing gives the carpet its stiffness and makes it easier to handle.
The second most important type of carpeting manufactured in Europe is fiber-bonded or needlefelt, representing 12% of production. The remaining 8-13% is accounted for by wovens (e.g., Axminster and Wilton) and other types of carpeting. Indoor/outdoor carpeting and artificial turf are manufactured by different processes but still employ backing compositions and are included in this market segment.
