15.29xEA - Rosin and Rosin Esters - European Adhesives

This raw material market report defines rosin as the resinous component of pine gum. Chemically, it is a mixture of organic acids. While there are three sources for this raw material: pine gum collection, pine stump distillation and fractionation of Tall Oil, a liquid by-product from kraft paper production.

While TOR can be used as is in some applications, its low softening point and acidic nature tend to limit those uses, and it is reacted with a polyol, such as pentaerythritol, to form an ester (TORE) for most adhesive applications.

Other chemical manipulations, such as disproportionation and hydrogenation are carried out to further improve suitability for adhesive use, principally color and stability improvement.

The functionality of rosin also opens the door to reaction with metallic hydroxides, such as calcium and zinc, to create salts and soaps. In the former case, this permits the production of resins with very high softening points for special applications such as high strength adhesives. In the latter (and much more important) case, it opens the door to the creation of dispersions that do not suffer from the technical nightmares associated with emulsification of non-polar products like hydrocarbon resins. This has proved a very valuable asset with the growth of acrylic emulsions in adhesives, particularly for pressure sensitive applications.

Rosin and its derivatives represent the origin of the concept of tackification with resins. Most of the early pressure sensitive formulations depended on rosin esters and natural rubber for their pressure sensitive function.

Being a natural product-based material, rosin and its derivatives have seen some peaks and valleys in availability and therefore, cost. There is nothing to suggest that this cyclical pattern will not continue, as some existing sources are exhausted and newer, more costly sources are developed.

However, this natural background gives rosin derivative suppliers an excellent promotional tool, versus the petroleum based resins from the standpoint of the use of renewable resources.

This resin classification market report on rosin and rosin esters estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry.
