This raw material market report on reclaim rubber includes information on all the various grades and types obtained from scrap products. Reclaim material, with a high natural rubber content, is usually desired for most adhesive end uses. Therefore, primary sources are scrap or trim from natural rubber products, such as surgical gloves and golf balls, rather than from tires. Overall usage of reclaim rubber will vary depending upon availability and price versus that of the virgin elastomers. Composition variability, color, staining, contaminants, etc., tend to make reclaim material less desirable than the virgin rubber in all but the lowest cost, least demanding adhesives.
The majority, approximately 80% of the raw material category, is reprocessed rubber. This is usually out of specification material relating to color, Mooney viscosity, or other performance specification. The material is reworked by blending with other off spec material or in specification material to give a workable and usable product for the adhesive formulator.
Reclaim and reprocessed rubber is commonly used as an extender for solvent-based adhesives containing other primary elastomers or as a solid elastomeric filler in certain mastics and sealants, such as bitumen based construction and highway sealants.
Reclaim rubber is only considered where raw material cost is the most important product criterion and product variability is not a major constraint. Since process cost is becoming important, reclaim suppliers are finding it increasingly difficult to justify its use on economic grounds, since the difference between prime product price and the cost of bringing reclaim to market continues to diminish, and occasionally, become negative. This seems to be a polymer with a very limited future in adhesives. This resin classification market report on reclaim rubber estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry. |
