This raw material market report on polypropylene includes information on the atactic polypropylene (APP) as described in the succeeding paragraphs and the amorphous polyolefins (APO). The amorphous polyolefins are fast replacing the APP. The amorphous polyolefins are tailor manufactured for the adhesive industry and are various olefin copolymers. These products may provide lower viscosities and better low temperature adhesion.
The commercial manufacture of polyproplylene results in two chemical types, atactic and isotactic polypropylene. In isotactic polypropylene, all methyl groups are positioned on the same side of the polymer chain; in atactic polypropylene, however, the methyl groups have a random distribution. The isotactic isomer is a tough, crystalline polymer widely used for a variety of mechanical applications, such as the manufacturing of film and molding, but finds little use in adhesives. The volume figures in this study do not include the isotactic polypropylene fibers used in non-wovens and textile laminating. Atactic polypropylene (APP), a soft, rubbery, amorphous polymer, is a minor by-product of isotactic polypropylene manufacture. APP is used both as a primary polymer and a modifier, such as a replacement for micro-crystalline wax, in commodity hot melt adhesives. Some chemical processing is required to remove impurities, such as catalyst residues, because they continue to thermal instability, color and odor development.
APP and APO compete with ethylene vinyl acetate, SBS and low molecular weight polyethylene in commodity hot melt applications, such as case and carton sealing, non-wovens and reinforced tape adhesives. Since APP is a byproduct of the much larger isotactic polypropylene market, the market price is influenced by availability and the cost associated with chemical processing. This resin classification market report on polypropylene estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry. |
