15.23xEA - Polyethylene - European Adhesives

Polyethylene resins are linear homopolymers of ethylene. These are low density, low molecular weight, ethylene polymers, sometimes referred to as polyethylene waxes. These products have important commercial application as components of packaging adhesives. Although their early primary use was in wax blends to produce superior low temperature, moisture barrier properties for heat sealable coatings, their use grew in a variety of packaging adhesive applications. Carpet seaming adhesives, bookbinding, rug backing, and other textile uses are also important applications for polyethylene adhesive compositions. Polyethylene adhesives are used for paper bonding, case and carton sealing, manufacturing multi-wall bags and sealing polyethylene-coated containers. Their low polarity makes them useful for sealing and adhering labels to polyethylene surfaces. The adhesive compositions are applied as hot melts or powders, with hot melt being the predominant application form.

Polyethylene resins are usually formulated with wax or resinous tackifiers, such as hydrocarbon resins, polyterpenes and wood rosin derivatives. Polyethylene adhesives usually contain less than 25% wax. Many commercial systems based on higher melt index grades of polyethylene (lowest molecular weight) contain little or no wax. The tackifiers, which generally act as adhesion promoters, are commonly used with polyethylene resins at concentrations of 20-40% of the formula.

Polyethylene resins contribute flexibility, low temperature properties, good aging properties and thermal stability to their adhesive compositions. In addition, they are low in color and, because they are thermoplastic, provide thermal-forming properties, which are important in some textile applications. This resin classification market report on polyethylene estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry.
