Thermosetting polyesters are unsaturated resins based on the reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol, such as propylene glycol or diethylene glycol and an unsaturated polybasic acid, such as maleic anhydride. A reactive monomer, usually styrene monomer, and an accelerator are mixed with the unsaturated polyester resin forming a 10% solids reactive liquid. Crosslinking is accomplished by the addition of a peroxide catalyst. Heat is often used to accelerate and/or complete the cure. Since the polymerization is catalytic in nature, thermosetting polyesters are more tolerant of errors in component rations and mixing than the other two systems that rely on stoichiometric quantities of reactants. Physical properties and the degree of crosslinking can be controlled by using mixtures of various acids and alcohols and by the polyester resin/monomer ratio.
Unsaturated thermosetting polyesters are widely used in plastic molding applications (i.e., automotive parts and pleasure boats) where a reinforcing material, such as fiberglass, is included to improve tensile and impact properties. General purpose resins, available from manufacturers who supply the large molding markets, are used by adhesive manufacturers to formulate two component, non-volatile adhesive systems. Automotive body fillers, which are used by repair shops, and do-it-yourself repair and customizing kits, represent a large end use market for unsaturated polyester systems. These products are usually not classified as adhesives and, therefore, are not included in this study.
Alkyds are unsaturated polyesters which are usually modified with oils and fatty acids to yield flexible systems that crosslink or cure at room temperature. Alkyds are widely used in various industrial and consumer coating applications. However, they find no significant usage as adhesives.
