Thermoplastic polyester resins are the reaction products of polyhydric alcohols (e.g., propylene glycol; 1, 4-butane diol; etc.) and a saturated polybasic acid (e.g., terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, etc.). The thermoplastic polyesters used in adhesive applications vary in chemical structure, molecular weight and crystallinity. In general, the more crystalline polymers are used for hot melt and powder adhesives, which require fast setting times. The amorphous polymers are used for solvent borne adhesives because they have better solubility. Solvent borne thermoplastic polyester adhesives may be either single package or two component systems. The two component adhesives crosslink, e.g., via a diisocyanate, to yield improved elevated temperature bond strength.
Thermoplastic polyester adhesives are high performance products and do not find use in low cost commodity end uses. These adhesives are used for applications that demand optimum properties, for example, specific substrate adhesion, excellent mechanical durability, high clarity, elevated temperature resistance, FDA approval, etc.
Most commercial thermoplastic polyester adhesives contain little or no additional formulating ingredients, such as low molecular weight tackifier resins or plasticizers. However, blends of different polyester resins are frequently used to design an adhesive for a specific application.
