Polyamides are typically condensation products of a dianhydride or dimer acid and primary diamine. Low molecular weight reactive polyamides (commonly used as hardeners in 2-part epoxy adhesives) and very high molecular weight polyamide polymers, such as nylon (used in specialty epoxy film adhesives) are included under Raw Material No. 10 (Epoxies).
Thermoplastic polyamides are usually produced via the reaction of the dimer acid (polymerized fatty acid) and a diamine, usually ethylene diamine. The three principal markets for this type of polyamide are adhesives, printing inks and reactants for epoxies. The adhesive market utilizes a hydrogenated dimer acid in order to obtain thermal stability. The printing ink industry uses a soluble polyamide, while epoxies require a highly reactive polyamide. The pale yellow liquid found in most 2-part epoxies in Do-It-Yourself Products is a reactive polyamide. Nylons are also polyamides but are not made from a dimer acid.
Commercial products are sometimes based on mixtures of acids and amines designed to contribute specific performance properties. Products range from low molecular weight semi-solids to high molecular weight solids. Blends of low, medium and high molecular weight polyamides are used to achieve the desired combination of adhesive properties required for a specific application. Thus, changes in melt viscosity and impact resistance may be obtained. Adhesives based on thermoplastic polyamides characteristically adhere to metals, glass, cellulosic substrates and many plastics. Additionally, these adhesives generally have good impact resistance, thermal stability and flexibility. The polar nature of polyamides contributes to specific adhesion and the ability to wet non-porous surfaces. Polyamides have relatively sharp melting points, particularly important in hot melt applications where quick set is desired. This resin classification report on polyamides estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry. |
