MSAR 2005 Chapter 8 - New Mineral Sands Projects 2001 - 2007

New Mineral Sands Projects 2001 - 2007
Extracts from Mineral Sands Annual Review 2005

Interest in new projects in the titanium mineral industry remained strong during 2004/5. With a tight zircon market, prices for zircon have increased significantly over the last 12-18 months, impacting on the viability and project commissioning schedule for a number of key projects. Zircon, which was once considered an insignificant co-product, has in some projects become the driving force to ensure project feasibility and transition to production. To take advantage of the current market for zircon a number of projects have been pushed forward and exploration efforts have been increased in an effort to bridge any current and/or future supply gaps.

This report describes the current status of new projects. The projects have been classified by those that have been commissioned in the last 12 months; those projects that have been approved, projects with completed technical feasibility studies; projects that have a defined scope and are under active investigation, and current exploration and pre-development activities. The expected additional capacity and earliest start-up date for each of the major projects are summarised, along with a listing of identified exploration and pre-development projects.
