Pig Iron 2001- 2007
Extracts from Mineral Sands Annual Review 2005
Pig iron is metallic iron containing >90% iron, most commonly produced from the smelting of iron ore in a blast furnace. It is also a co-product of titanium slag production. In this operation, iron recovered from smelting of ilmenite, which typically has 44-55% FeO, is collected as a high grade molten iron. In the process of ilmenite smelting, 500-600 kg pig iron is produced per 1,000 kg titanium slag produced depending on the iron content of the ilmenite. The molten iron is tapped from the furnace, treated to reduce carbon, silicon and sulphur contents and cast into ingots (pigs). The product is marketed as high purity pig iron (HPPI). HPPI is also known as nodular pig iron or ductile pig iron. |
