MSAR 2005 Chapters 5 & 6 - Zircon overview and markets 2001 - 2007

Zircon overview and markets 2001- 2007
Extracts from Mineral Sands Annual Review 2005

Zircon is recovered as a co-product from most titanium mining operations, although depending on the mineral assemblage of each deposit, the ratio of zircon to titanium minerals can vary widely. The rock ilmenite producers, QIT and Titania, produce no zircon, while for other producers such as Namakwa Sands, Iluka and RBM, zircon provides an important contribution to total revenue. This chapter reviews the production and consumption of zircon over the period 2004-2007.

Global zircon consumption in 2004 increased by 2.8% over 2003 levels to reach 1.165 million tonnes, the lowest rate of growth in six years. Underlying demand remains strong, however actual consumption is effectively being constrained by the availability of zircon sand. The major end-use market sectors showed considerable variation in demand growth from slightly negative rates for both refractories and foundry applications, through moderate growth in ceramic applications, to a significant 16% jump in offtake in the zirconia/zirconium chemicals sector. Zircon consumption trends in each of the major market segments are discussed.
