TiO2 Pigment 2001 - 2007
Extracts from Mineral Sands Annual Review 2005
The TiO2 pigment industry is the major end-use market for titanium feedstocks, accounting for approximately 94% of feedstock consumption in 2004. Global pigment demand grew by approximately 7.7% during 2004, with global demand recovering after a flat market in 2003. Most of this increase was due to continued strong demand growth in China. In many ways, 2004 can be regarded as the year in which the full impact of Chinese demand began to be truly understood. Alongside the strong demand growth for pigment in China was the rapid increase in both pigment imports and local pigment production in that country. New sulfate capacity that was added in China and other regions partially offset the reductions to sulfate capacity in Western Europe, South Africa and the US. With demand at a very high level, most of the major pigment producers operated their plants at, or close to, full capacity during the year. Overall global capacity utilisation was approximately 92%, although chloride utilisation was higher at approximately 94%. Many plants have either been debottlenecked or are currently in the process of being debottlenecked to match the high demand that is still evident in the early part of 2005. The global supply/demand situation for TiO2 pigment was closely balanced in 2004. |
