Introduction to the Titanium and Zircon Industries
Extracts from Mineral Sands Annual Review 2005
The mineral sands industry involves two principal product chains. The first is the supply of titanium raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal, and the second is the supply of zircon sand to a wide range of consuming industries including ceramics and refractories. The titanium and zircon industry is characterised by a concentration of ownership in the hands of a relatively small number of large mining groups, and by close relationships between mineral producers and consumers. There is a moderate degree of vertical integration within the industry with a handful of groups participating in mining through to beneficiation and the production of TiO2 pigment. The key relationships within the industry are outlined. |
