These tape products are primarily self-wound (linerless), but there are a number of the tapes that also come in a backed version for specialized application purposes. Masking / protective tapes are used in a broad range of metal and plastic fabricating industries, both during the manufacturing process of the product and during shipping and storage, to protect fragile and highly finished surfaces, such as polished chrome, stainless steel, model, acrylic sheeting, metallized rigid and flexible plastics, laminated beams, furniture, etc. Other versions are used as stop-off tapes for plating and various metal treatments, as well as painting and cleaning. The sign and decal industry makes wide use of pre-masks for product application and for stenciling.
