15.11USA - Cyanoacrylates - U.S. Adhesives

This raw material report defines cyanoacrylates as monomers of 2-cyanoacrylate modified with polymethacrylate, polyacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, and/or cellulose ester. As adhesives, cyanocrylates may be used as a straight monomer or modified with various polymeric materials as described above in order to achieve the desired rheology characteristics. Different cyanoacrylates esters are sometimes blended or modified with other monomers for specific adhesive properties. Cyanoacrylate compounds polymerize within seconds in the presence of a weak base, such as water. The reaction is retarded, though, if the environment is acidic (i.e., substrates such as wood).

Cyanoacrylates develop specific adhesion to most non-porous substrates. (Polyolefins and plasticized PVC are exceptions.) This characteristic, combined with a rapid cure rate, high tensile strength and the fact that they are 100% reactive liquids, makes them applicable to many specialized bonding situations. In most applications, the cyanoacrylates adhesive is applied to one surface, which is then quickly mated with the other surface to be bonded thereby spreading the liquid adhesive over the substrates. Moisture, present in the atmosphere and on the substrate surfaces, activates the cure. Bonds may be handled within a few minutes. Application equipment is available to accurately meter and dispense these highly reactive adhesive systems. Precise control of adhesive application reduces waste and minimizes bond variability.

Cyanoacrylates are expensive products used for very specialized adhesive applications that make maximum use of their rapid bond development at ambient temperatures and almost universal specific adhesion. Product assembly operations, particularly those that are automated, involving dissimilar substrates such as metals, glass, and various plastics and elastomers in relatively small areas are ideally suited to the use of cyanoacrylates. They are also sold as quick setting consumer do-it-yourself adhesives. This resin classification report on cyanoacrylates estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry.
