This raw material report on cellulosics (U.S. Adhesives Industry) includes information on all commercial cellulose esters and derivatives. Examples of solvent borne cellulose products would include nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), and cellulose propionate; examples of water soluble cellulose esters include methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)
Cellulose is a long chain, high molecular weight natural polymer. Wood pulp and cottonseed linters are the sources of the commercial cellulose raw material. Chemically, cellulose is a ring polymer with hydroxyl functionality. Various esters of cellulose, in which both the molecular weight and residual hydroxyl functionality are controlled during manufacture, have found commercial use in solvent and water borne systems.
Cellulose may be used as a primary adhesive polymer, but is most often used as a thickener to control adhesive rheology or as a colloidal stabilizer for other synthetic water borne polymers. Cellulose finds considerable usage as a binder for papermaking, ceramics, explosives, and textiles. Pharmaceutical uses include binders for tablet manufacturing, time release pills, hair sprays, and facial masks. None of the above applications are included in this study. This resin classification report on cellulosics estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry. |
