The supply of the raw material casein, a natural protein derived from milk by-products, competes on the basis of price and availability with alternate uses for skimmed milk, such as non-fat milk powders. Major sources for U.S. market traditionally have been from other countries, which are larger producers of butter and cheese. Caseins are inexpensive, water soluble, nontoxic and water-resistant.
Casein adhesives are supplied in aqueous solutions or as powders that are then solubilized in water by the end user through the use of alkalines, such as sodium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide. Wood and paper bonding represent the largest applications for casein adhesives. This resin classification report on casein estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry. |
