15.08xEA - Butyl Rubber - European Adhesives

This raw material report on butyl rubber (Europe / European Adhesives Industry) includes information on all grades of butyl rubber, including halogenated. Butyl rubber is manufactured from copolymerized isobutylene (97% minimum) with isoprene (3% maximum). The reaction with isoprene provides some unsaturated sites, which allows crosslinking. These are amorphous, nonpolar polymers with good oxidative and thermal stability properties, as well as permanent flexibility, inherent tack and excellent moisture resistance.

Butyl rubbers range from viscous liquids to tough elastomeric solids with certain grades available in latex form. The various commercial grades differ in degree of unsaturation and molecular weight. Halogenated butyls, which are more reactive than the standard butyl rubbers, are also available. The final product is generally formulated utilizing plasticizers and tackifiers to form a solvent, water borne or hot melt adhesive. The largest use for butyl rubber is in sealants, particularly window sealants. This resin classification report on butyl rubber estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry.
