This raw material report on bitumens (U.S. Adhesives Industry) defines bitumens as hydrocarbon materials obtained from naturally occurring pitches and asphalts or their counterparts from petroleum fractionation residues. Bitumens are liquids or semi-solids which typically harden on aging due to loss of volatile components. They also are available commercially as emulsions.
Bitumens are inexpensive and plentiful. Typical of many hydrocarbon products, they have good moisture resistance and excellent compatibility with many synthetic resins and polymers. Bitumens have the disadvantages of dark color, odor, color bleed, poor solvent resistance, and elevated temperature properties. Major uses for bitumens, not covered in this study, include roofing compounds, caulks and road construction sealants. This resin classification report on bitumens estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 2000 as well as forecasts through 2005 and 2010 within the U.S. Adhesives Industry. |
