This raw material report on animal and fish glues (U.S. Adhesives Industry) is based on collagen extracted from the skins, bones and connective tissues of animals and fish. Major raw material sources are the byproducts of the meat-packing and leather industries and of fish processing plants. These products are soluble in aqueous solutions, insoluble in organic solvents, and are generally supplied as solid granules or in cake form. Commercial products are graded according to wet strength, which covers a broad range of viscosities. The high test grades provide the highest viscosities and fastest set speed.
The adhesive strength of animal and fish glues is formed through a combination of heat loss and water loss. The animal glues, which are generally dissolved in hot aqueous solutions, form a gel upon cooling that has excellent tack and green strength properties. Bond strength is further increased as the water loss from the glue line continues. Because fully dried bonds are brittle, plasticizers, such as sorbitol, glycerin, and other humectants are commonly used. Bonds generally have good elevated temperature strength properties (300+°F.). Water miscible crosslinkers, such as phenolic resoles, are occasionally used to increase surface temperature properties and to improve water resistance. Other tanning agents are also used to make the adhesive more water-resistant.
An unusual characteristic of animal glue solutions is their reversible gelling. They form a firm gel upon cooling which converts to a liquid when heated. These gelling properties are especially useful in such applications as forming satin finish wheels for use in industrial polishing.
