15.04xEA - Anaerobics - European Adhesives

This raw material report on anaerobics (Europe / European Adhesives Industry) defines anaerobics as one-component liquid resins, typically hydroxyalkyl methyl acrylate diisocyanate addition products or the reaction of a diol-diisocyanate and hydroxyalkyl methyl acrylate, whose polymerization is air-inhibited. A free radical cure mechanism begins when air is eliminated and contact occurs with metal, which may serve as a catalyst. Adhesives are commonly packaged in small applicator containers with free air space to prevent polymerization. The adhesive is applied to the substrates to be bonded and, when the substrates are joined excluding the air inhibitor, rapid polymerization occurs.

Anaerobic adhesives are often formulated for specific end use applications involving automatic application and assembly equipment. Commercial systems vary from low viscosity liquids to get-like pastes. Chemical activators or additives are also used to control cure speed, rheology and specific adhesion. Outstanding adhesive performance properties include rapid set (i.e., bond can be handled in 15-60 seconds), room-temperature cure and adhesion to many non-porous and porous substrates.

Anaerobics have experienced high growth rates since their inception in the mid-1950’s and are currently being challenged by encapsulated epoxies and improved cyanoacrylates. However, the reported fourth generation of anaerobics is said to have higher torque, be faster drying, have better predictability and less sensitivity to specific surfaces. These improvements, coupled with the high growth rate for anaerobics within the repair market, is expected to keep the demand for anaerobics high. This resin classification report on anaerobics estimates 2003 demand with a historical perspective back to 1998 as well as forecasts through 2008 within the Europe / European Adhesives Industry.
