…There is no denying that demand for resins has dropped significantly since 2007.  The car sector is but one example.  In North America, estimated capacity utilization for U.S. auto manufacturers is only 56% in 2009 after the numerous plant closures that have already taken place.  Sales of OEM automotive coatings in the region declined by 11.5% in 2008 and are expected to drop a further 19.5% in 2009, according to Rick Jones, a vice president with The ChemQuest Group, Inc.

In the architectural market, the demand for resins fell about 10% from 2007 to 2008, and is expected to decline a further 8% in 2009, according to George R. Pilcher, a vice president with The ChemQuest Group, Inc.

Aerospace and marine coatings, too, have seen demand hold fairly steady.  “The aerospace industry in particular has many backlogged orders in the system,” Pilcher explains.
