Excerpts from… “European Coatings Show 2007 Plus Adhesives, Sealants, Construction Chemicals - 23,000 Trade Visitors from 99 Countries”

…………A particularly interesting paper was the presentation by Dr. Jürgen Wegner (ChemQuest Europe) of a recent market study on formulated adhesives. It contains a large amount of informative data for globally active adhesives formulators and makes valuable contributions towards an assessment of the market up to the year 2010. For example, Dr. Wegner made it clear that growth in the adhesives market, which is currently just under 4%, is below the global GDP of currently 5% and will probably not catch up until 2010. However, on the basis of the predictable development in water-based acrylates, for example, in China, the East Asia/Pacific region and the USA, with annual growth rates of 6-7%, and in Western Europe, where the figure is 5%, growth is disproportionately high. According to Dr. Wegner, the driving forces are the construction, packaging and adhesive tape industries. Furthermore, Wegner confirmed and expanded the figures presented by the German Adhesives Association IVK on per--capita adhesives consumption, which give a worldwide per-capita figure of 2.2 kg, which is expected to rise to 2.4 kg by 2010. The country with the highest per-capita adhesive consumption is currently the USA with just under 8 kg, followed by Italy, with over 7 kg. Germany is in third place, with a per-capita consumption of approximately 6.5 kg, followed by France (approx. 5.5 kg), the UK (approx. 5.3 kg) and Spain (approx. 4.9 kg). The analysis of the acrylate adhesive market presented in this report also shows that – against all expectations – an annual worldwide growth rate of 4.2% for solvent-based acrylate systems is expected up to 2010, while annual growth of 5.7 % is forecast for water-based acrylate systems.
